2 more days!

Tomorrow and Friday will be one day split into two.  Middle school will be watching a movie tomorrow after lunch.  I will be meeting with both 6th grades and 8 Gold.  We will be finishing up benchmarking and working on ALEKS.  I will be leaving for Hawaii :)  tomorrow afternoon and will not be here Friday!  I hope everyone has a WONDERFUL Christmas break!  Please try to get on ALEKS a few times over break to keep math skills fresh! 

4 More days!

There have been some issues with students stealing milk in the cafe during lunch time.  If a student is caught they will receive a conduct notice and will have a lunch detention with the teachers on duty the following day. 

7 grade is still benchmarking!  Hopefully everyone will be finished by the end of the week. 

I will not be at school Thursday afternoon and Friday.  I am leaving for Hawaii to visit my brother, dad and nephew for Christmas! :)  I will be posting on the class pages up til Thursday!

Tomorrow is a dollar jeans day for all students to help raise money for St. Elizabeth's home and other families in need during the Christmas Season.  There has been a small amount of participation in 7th grade towards our St. Elizabeth's home service project.  Miss Pelle's homeroom is collecting arts and crafts supplies and books.  The deadline for this service project is Friday.

7th grade is still benchmarking during Math class, there will be no ACE or grades posted.  Please have your child get on ALEKS at home while benchmarking.

Holy Spirit is doing a service project for St. Elizabeth's home.  My homeroom has been asked bring in donations of arts and crafts books and supplies or money so i can go and purchase items.  Only 1 student in my homeroom has participated in this service project.  Please bring in items by 12/10!

Aleks participation is Low!  This is a very helpful tool that is customized to your child's needs!  Students should be getting on Aleks AT LEAST three times a week!  Parents, please help your child remember to get on!

Choir is going on a field trip tomorrow.  All choir students need to turn in their homework assigned tonight before leaving for the field trip.  Check the class pages for assignments due tomorrow!

Please remember what was discussed at conferences.  Just because a child does not have an assignment to "turn in"  does not mean they don't have work to do.  Use your child's ISP's and Smart Goals as part of their homework.  Aleks was brought up in may smart goals and should be used especially when your child does not have ACE.  Check your class page for updates!

Tomorrow is a No Conduct/No Uniform reminder dress out day for Middle School.  Please be sure your child is still wearing the appropriate dress out attire.  All students need to be in pants (jeans, sweats, etc) and close toe, close heal shoes. 

When checking your child's class page, remember, if there is no assigned ACE, students can still work on ALEKS or their smart goals for math!

Aleks is BACK!

We have been waiting to start ALEKS back up because subscriptions were expiring.  I have just updated accounts and passwords.  To help prevent the "I forgot my password" epidemic, all student passwords are the same as their ALEKS logins.  We will be using the next two days to go to the lab, establish our new logins and passwords and work on new assessments.  Students will have their accounts ready to use right before fall break! :)

Also, the PE blog link is now posted under my "Check It Out"  links!

Finished ISP Friday!

Out of 110 middle school students I only have 9 more ISP's for math to finish!  YAY!  All the classes have been very cooperative while doing one-on-one's.  The goals are fantastic and student's can't wait to share them at conferences!

Tomorrow is Green and Gold day and $3 to dress out Monday is due tomorrow.

We Dress Nice Wednesday!

I loved seeing the kids all dressed up!  Everyone looked so nice.  Tomorrow is College Sports day, all students can wear jeans and a college t shirt or sweatshirt!  Please check the class pages for updates.  We are working hard on out ISP's and the kids are working independently while we do one-on-ones.

Great first day of spirit week!  I know i really enjoyed wearing my PJ's today.  Tomorrow is Hat Day.  Students need to come to school in their uniforms and may not exchange hats.

Friday is the end of the quarter!  Please keep checking the on line grade book.  All students should know where they stand in all their classes before report cards/student lead conferences.

A Few Things

* 7 Grade - Our new Chapter Accentuate the Negative is all about algebra and integers.  Students need to learn the rules of operations with integers.  We will NOT be using calculators in math class this chapter.  Please encourage your child to NOT use a calculator on homework. 

* With the change in season, and new apparel being purchased; all students need to write their names (or initials) on the tags of their uniforms.

* Fund raiser sales forms due 10/12

* 7th grade PE journals are due 10/18

Technology Fundraiser

Today kicked off the Market Day Technology Fund Raiser.  Students need to bring back the fundraiser notification form signed and returned by 10/5.  The fundraiser sales are due 10/12.  The catalog students are bringing home can be ordered from all year on line, but paper orders are due 10/12. 

Jeans Day Tomorrow!

If your child did not receive a conduct notice/lunch detention since the beginning of the school year, they are allowed to dress out.  Please remember no flip flops or sandals.  Shoes much be close toe and close heal.

Upcoming Tests

All grades are taking their first Chapter tests this week or next.  The day before the tests, students will be working on a study guide.  The study guide is a practice test, students use class time to ask me questions and work through problems they are having.   The day after the chapter tests all grades work on the next Chapters Vocabulary and have a binder check. 

Check out the test book page and have your child work thru the multiple choice tests for extra practice!

JOY

7th grade did an excellent job at Habitat for Humanity today, they really showcased Holy Spirit well.  Miss Martin and I look forward to taking 7th grade to Habitat again in the Spring!

Don't forget to keep checking the on line grade book.  We are adding grade to the on line grade book a few times a week.  This is a good way to track missing assignments and your child's progress.

Late Work

There are 36 missing assignments in the middle school due to absences or "forgetting" to do homework.  That is about 32% of the middle school.  This is WAY too high of a number.  Please check the online grade book for any missing assignments (please remember, it take 24 hours from when the teacher inputs the grade for the grade to post on line).  If you are not able to access the on line grade book, please e mail me at  kpelle@holyspirit-indy.org

Homework Procedures

Students are getting in a (bad) habit of working on their homework the days it's due in their morning homeroom or during other class periods leading up to the class that they have homework in.  Homework is meant to be done at HOME.  Students are not learning the material assigned if they are rushing to get it done in the morning or sneaking to finish it during other classes.  If they are working on assignments in other classes, they are also missing out of that classes discussions.  Please talk with your child about the importance of homework!

*As part of our Colt's Fitness Week Celebration, students are asked to go out and walk for 30 minutes tonight.  Please sign a piece of paper stating how long your child walked tonight.  Also we are decorating our classrooms with Colts themes.  If you have any Colts (or Blue) decorations to share please send them in with your child.

Keep Checking Assignment Notebooks

6th grade is still getting a lot of homework notices. Please keep checking assignment notebooks and blogs for upcoming assignments.  Our third full week of school is coming to an end, students should start feeling more comfortable with their new routine.  We will end our week with a $1 Colts Blue Jeans day and a fitness walk in the morning!  Check out your class page for tonight's homework! The classroom pages were getting pretty full, I cleared some of the previous assignments/postings so it would be easier to find current assignments.  Remember graded papers are in your child's math binder.  Graded Check Up's are getting passed back.  Please check the T/Q/C section of the binder for graded check ups.

A Note From Mrs. Parsons

Dear Middle School Parents:

We are off to a great start in middle school this year! The students are cooperating and giving it their “personal best”.

Please refer to the student cultural guide, the handbook, for appropriate uniform at Holy Spirit School. We have students wearing capri’s pants, blue skirts, beige skirts, cargo shorts and no belts. Students will receive guidelines this week.

We will welcome a new teacher for Mrs. Moran’s class. Today, we interviewed and have a candidate we are very interested in offering the position. She has a reading specialist certification and teaching license. The applicant is a member of Holy Spirit Parish. Miss Ruth Winters will assist Mrs. Parsons this week in reading class. As soon as we receive word on a teacher, we will notify parents.

Mrs. Gladys Tartar, Sr. Joann’s receptionist, started in Spanish class today. She will be our Spanish teacher for the year. We are happy to welcome Mrs. Tartar to the school staff.

Short Week!

I hope everyone enjoyed their holiday weekend!  Please remember your child's presence at school is essential for a successful school year.  Between benchmarking, quizzes, note taking, projects, etc; it is very hard for students to catch up on the work they've missed! 

All grades have a Check Up this week.  Please check your child's assignment notebooks and class page daily! 

TGIF!

It was a week of hard work!  All grades have homework scheduled for the weekend!  Please check you class page.  7th and 8th both need graph paper for their assignments, you can get some at the "Printable graph paper link" under check it out.
For next week, all classes will have a Check Up next week.   Check Ups are mini quizzes.  Each class has their check ups on a different day, so please check out the class pages.

Math Class

For those of you who are new to Holy Spirit and the 6th grade families.  I wanted to give a brief description of how math class goes each day. 
Students work on an Investigation daily (note taking, problem solving etc).  An Investigation consists  of question and problems focused on a State Standard. 
The Investigation is broken up into 4 part.  The Goal describes the standard being covered.  Next is the Launch, during the launch students take notes (provided by me) that will help them solve the problem of the day.  Explore comes next.  Students work in groups to answers the questions provided in the book.  Next we Summarize, students take additional notes that either wrap up the concept, review past concepts or elaborate for higher thinking. 
At the end of each Investigation ACE questions as assigned from the book.  These are normally due the next class period.  Some investigations can take two days, when this happens, ACE will be assigned once the Summary is completed.

Active Math

Students were very hands on today.  All classes did an experiment or game in class.  Ask your 8th grader (GOLD) how they broke their bridges, 7th grade about Jumping Jacks, and 6th grade how to play the Factor Game.  Please check your child's class page for ACE (homework numbers) tonight.

Math -Tastic Monday!

Hello All,
In each class today we took a Pretest over our first chapter of the year.  All students have vocab tonight as homework. 

This week, starting tomorrow, 8th grade will be blocked for math and science.  I will see 8 Gold on Tuesday and Thursday and 8 Green on Wednesday and Friday. 

Please remember to check assignment notebooks daily!  I tend to have homework daily!

What a great Thursday!

I am so excited to see I have 8 followers!  The more the merrier!  As a reminder, along with checking the home page of the blog, don't forget to check you're child's class page (and homeroom page if it applies to you.) and assignment notebook. Tomorrow will be our last day reviewing.  Monday we start our first chapter in the text book.  8th grade's first chapter is Thinking with Mathematical Models, 7th grade's first chapter is variables and Patterns, and 6th grade's first chapter will be Prime Time.

Review Day

Middle School Math - Getting Started

Greetings Parents and Students,

Welcome to my blog!  This is my first experience with "blogging"  and I hope you visit often!  This blog will serve as an information center for students and parents.  I will be posting homework assignments, dates for upcoming Tests/Quizzes, important reminders, brief summaries of day-to-day classroom activities and discuss topics and standards covered in class. 

Middle school had an excellent start to the new school year.  I've really enjoyed getting to know the new 6th grade class, as well as the new students to Holy Spirit.

Math binders were organized Monday.  As a reminder, student's math binders need to come to class with them every day, they also need to go home every night.  The handout, notes and vocab sections serves as the students' text book, students will be adding valuable information to these binders daily.

Tomorrow, all classes will begin reviewing essential skills/standards from the previous year.  Please check tomorrow for more posts, updates, and assignment listings!
